Drive Out Clutter in Your Garage and Your Home

We’ve teamed up with home gurus myhomeideas to bring you the best advice on how to maximise space in your garage:

Before you begin

Evaluate the contents of your garage

Ensure there’s enough clearance to park your cars and get in and out.

Work out what you really need

Often you come across items you haven’t used in years, and there’s no point holding on to such things.

Clear that clutter

Take unwanted items to a charity shop near you or plan a garage sale to turn them into cash. Alternatively, take them to a car boot sale, and make a day of it with the family. Find all you need to know about your local car boot sale at carboot junction.

Schedule a thorough cleaning

Consider hiring a cleaning service, or enlist family members to help. Walk through other rooms in your house to see if they contain any underutilized furniture that can be repurposed in the garage

Customise Your Needs

It’s tempting to rely on whatever storage components previous owners left, but they’re often impractical for your own needs. Instead, choose new storage solutions that suit your own hobbies and requirements. Check out some of our favourite ideas.

Young children? Choose components like ball caddies or shoe racks that can be hung at different heights as children grow – making it easier for them to retrieve toys or put away boots unassisted. As your family’s activities change, storage accessories can be designated for new uses.

Stackable storage drawers are ideal for storing smaller pieces. They can hold tools, garden supplies, or toys, for example. Opt for clear plastic, which lets you see inside, while keeping the contents dust free.

Put a bench in the garage to provide a handy spot for your family to put on and remove sports gear. If you’re buying a bench, check out home stores for a model designed with a storage shelf underneath to let wet boots and shoes drain dry.

Need more surface space in a small garage? Install a fold-down table – it can be tucked away when not in use so the traffic zones remain clear.

Hang bikes vertically to save valuable floor space and make sure safety helmets are stored nearby so they don’t get forgotten.

Devote a shelf for your tent and a box of camping gear, such as a torch gas burner with pans, fist aid kit and a spare ground sheet. Alternatively, keep it all together in a wheeled storage chest – it’ll make loading the car much easier.

Jewellery making, scrapbooking, and other craft projects can find room in your garage. Create a crafts centre with storage devices with small drawers to keep all items related to projects close at hand.

Plan Your New Space

After you’ve identified the items you want to keep and cleared away the ones you don’t, determine where your things will go. Take the opportunity to reclaim areas.

Sports gear, for example, doesn’t have to be kept on display, often you can make your space more visually appealing if you tuck away items, such as golf clubs and boots, in a closed storage unit. For seasonal clothing storage, you might consider using a pair of J-shaped hooks to hold a dowel from which you can suspend garment bags on hangers.

Check the number of pounds for which different-sized hooks are rated, and use an electronic stud finder to ensure you are driving the hook into a stud or joist capable of safely supporting the weight of the items you intend to suspend.
